  • Eye-Drive – Online Backup for Google Glass

Google Glass is a revolutionary product from Google. It is probably one of the first products in the ‘Wearable computers’ category that has captured the imagination of the world.

IDrive has the tradition of being the first in many fields. For example, we were the first to offer online backup and restore for iPhone contacts with an App called ‘IDrive Lite‘. Following the tradition of innovation in online backup for new devices, we are proud to announce our new product Eye-Drive.

    google-glass

It sports some basic online backup functionality, such as backing up of your videos and pictures that are being recorded real time. It will be smart enough to not to use the bandwidth while the appliance is using internet.  It will compress and send only the modified bits if it happens to be a repeat video or picture of the same subject optimizing the transfer time and speed. It will also backup your searches and queries.

    EyeGlass

But here are some really interesting features that you need to take a look at.

‘Timeline’ backup and restore. Once your data is backed up, you will be able recall your last meeting or your day or event in full resolution and play it back any time!

It will also provide filters to change the subject characteristics just for fun. Say you want to change the color of the dress on the subject.

The best feature, however, is the optional private key encryption. If you chose this, the backed up data is accessible only by you and no one else. Even the US Govt will not be able to see the data. Consider this vs syncing that data to google drive where the data is stored in the clear for advertisements and for whatever reasons.

You would be able backup multiple google glasses, for your entire family or for your small business into one eye-IDrive account. No per Glass license fees, unlike some competitors!

Also we never delete your data unless you decide to. We are a true archiving service. Some competitors delete your data after 30 days.

Pricing will be announced at launch time which will coincide with general availability of Google Glass; with storage prices dropping every day, we want to provide the best value to our customers.

NOTE: As this backs up to the cloud, actual clouds must be present. Eye-Drive will not work in cloudless conditions!

  • Top 5 Reasons to Add Online Backup to your Routine

Fun Fact: World Backup Day is March 31st. Chances are, you – or someone you know – has had the unfortunate experience of losing important data. Every day someone’s hard drive bites the dust (somehow, this happens more often to college students right around finals. Weird right?). Save yourself the headache with IDrive Online Backup. Not convinced? Here’re our Top 5 reasons to include Online Backup in your routine:

    top5

    5. Hardware Failure – Almost everyone has experienced this. One day, you’re working on your computer with no problems. You’re slinging emails like a boss. You’re editing photos better than those photoshopping hacks over at Vogue. You’re kicking digital online ass. Then boom. Your hard drive gives up the ghost and takes all your data down with it. Computers break. Backing your stuff up to the cloud ensures that when something goes wrong, you’re not screwed.

    4. Murphy’s Law – Accidents happen all the time. You have no control over random disasters like spilled coffee on a laptop, or the apocalypse. Trust us. It’ll be much easier to restart your life after the end of the world from a cloud backup.

    3. Automatic – The best part about backing up with IDrive is that you can be lazy about it. Schedule your back-ups and let IDrive do the work. You can even have it send you notifications when a back-up runs! That’s peace of mind for a minimal amount of effort.

    2. Secure – Privacy is a huge concern in the digital age. IDrive stores your files using top-of-the-line, 256-bit AES encryption. That means you don’t have to worry about hackers brute forcing their way to your data. It also means that you’re the only one who can see what files you’re storing.

    1. Data is Valuable – Your data is the most valuable part of your computer. Parts can be replaced, but those incriminating self shots, extensive library of polska albums and embarrassing high school poems are what make it yours. It’s not easy to replace that stuff. Back it up.

  • Olympic Season reminds you to back that data up!

Olympic season is here! The world is keeping its eye on London, where the 2012 Olympics open this Friday. There are other people, however, keeping their eyes on you and your digital devices. According to Venafi, a provider of IT security, an estimated 67,000 phones will be lost or stolen with at least a third of those being smartphones. The amount of data loss with this estimate is a staggering 214 terabytes! This figure isn’t including potential loss or theft of laptops or tablet devices.

According to Gregory Webb, Venafi’s VP of Marketing, “There’s been an explosion of corporate data available to users from their mobile devices. This is a real danger and one that is often overlooked[.] People don’t consider or take action to protect the vast volumes of information they carry and have internet access to. With the ever-shrinking boundaries between work devices and work-enabled personal devices, lost or stolen smartphones and other mobile devices that fall into the wrong hands place companies and business data at tremendous risk.”

Now is the best time to start thinking about your critical data and what you can do to safeguard it. At IDrive, we pride ourselves on our secure universal backup services. Backup all of your PCs, Macs, Android, and iOS devices all into one account, so you never end up without critical data in the unthinkable happens.

IDrive (Online Backup) is available as a free download in the Apple App Store and in the Android Market. Using our app, you can back up contacts, photos, and videos directly from your iOS or Android device! Since data is stored in the cloud, it can be restored later with ease.

Those interested can create a free IDrive account and store their first 5 GB at no charge.  IDrive Online Backup is available on Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android.

  • Why privacy and security are so important in cloud storage?

The recent address book leakage with a popular online storage, sync and sharing service provider highlights the privacy and security issues with cloud storage services in general.

This is exactly why we focus on privacy and security. Our services IDrive, IBackup and the recently launched IDriveSync are built from the ground up using our own infrastructure, APIs, and a sharp focus on privacy and security, with AES 256 Bit encryption of data on storage with a unique key for every account, and a private key option (currently available for IDrive and IBackup)  that makes it impossible for anyone to have access to the data except the user.

This focus may mean we may be compromising on certain business opportunities, including being able to scan the data and present advertisements based on user data, or offer some viral features. But this is not a direction we will take. Our focus will be on providing the most private and secure online storage, backup, sync and access services.

Due to our focus and efforts we now store over 30 PetaBytes of data. We appreciate your support and trust.

  • IDrive Introduces Linux Online Backup

Good news for the Linux enthusiasts out there; IDrive now has a way for you to backup your critical data into the cloud! Today, we’d like to introduce the Linux box Backup script from IDrive.

To get started backing up your critical data, the first thing you need is an IDrive account. Even a free IDrive account will do, you can sign up quickly and easily right now! Next, just download the script from the IDrive App Gallery and follow the instructions listed to get your backup up and running.

This plugin was made using IDrive’s EVS public APIs, and an excellent example of a real-world application using the EVS APIs. Built with developers in mind, EVS is a powerful, easy to use service that provides secure, encrypted and versioned cloud storage. Unlike other generic storage systems, IDrive EVS has storage encryption, versioning, and block level incremental transfers built in.

Developers have the freedom to create innovative applications to customize backup, storage, disaster recovery, and more that are highly efficient, scalable and require minimal coding. EVS was built, in house, from the ground up, for IDrive.  These powerful APIs are freely available, making it easy to upload, retrieve, manage, and store data any time, from anywhere on the Internet.

Those interested can create a free IDrive account and store their first 5GB at no charge, developers included.  You can create EVS apps for IDrive without the need of a paid account.

IDrive Online Backup is also available for home and server editions of Windows and Mac OS X and for mobile devices in the Apple App Store and Android Market.

  • Security Report Details Vulnerabilities, IDrive Online Backup Provides a Solution

According to a new report released by the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT), several competing Online Backup companies have been found lacking in the area of security. The report found security issues and vulnerabilities with several popular Online Backup and Online Sync providers. Some areas where much work was needed include transport security and encryption. IDrive Online Backup, however, is already following the suggested steps outlined by SIT to have optimal security.

Complaints that SIT had about competitors include that they use lower-grade, or even no encryption before transport. IDrive protects your files by using 256-bit AES encryption, which is a military-grade encryption standard; before files ever leave your computer, they are encrypted by the IDrive software. In the extremely unlikely case that a file gets intercepted during transport, it will look like a jumbled mess due to the encryption. Think of it as putting all your important data into a security briefcase  before sending it over to us.

Competing products also had issues with encryption on the server side. Two of the seven services use a proprietary key, so there’s no telling how those work. Additionally, three of the remaining the seven providers included in the study don’t encrypt files stored on their servers at all. Just think about that for a minute! Your entire digital life – every photo, every document – all stored somewhere in the cloud with no encryption to protect it. That would be like keeping important documents in a plain drawer without a key. What’s the point in paying for a service like that?

At IDrive, we use the same exact 256-bit AES encryption to store your files once they’ve been securely uploaded to our servers. In this case, it’s like IDrive receiving your security briefcase and placing the contents into a secure storage vault. Again, this is the top-of-the-line encryption standard used by banks and the military to keep sensitive information as safe as possible.

Create a free IDrive account today, and securely back up your digital life. IDrive Online Backup is available for home and server editions of Windows and Mac OS X and for mobile devices in the Apple App Store and Android Market.
