  • Be Kind, IDrive Rewind

    idrive rewind

Our new feature, IDrive Rewind, is geared toward users who want to protect their data from possible future Crypto Virus attacks as well as those who have previously been affected by ransomware. Ransomware is an attack where data is encrypted by a third party and held for ransom, forcing users to pay to get their data unlocked. Rewind allows users to restore previous, unaffected files to their computers so as to avoid paying the ransom that many virus creators demand in exchange for the key that they claim will unlock the encrypted data.

In the past year, a rise in Crypto Viruses have affected hundreds of thousands of users. The biggest one being CryptoLocker, but many other ransomware trojans and malware exist as well.
We developed IDrive Rewind to aid our users in retrieving their data at no cost, in the event they are hit by a Crypto Virus.

    Rewind benefits:

    • Users can go into their backup history and restore earlier versions of files or folders to a point before files were infected.
    • Previous, unharmed versions can be restored to an uninfected PC or Mac, and, avoiding dealing with the virus directly.
    • IDrive has always offered users the option to restore up to 30 previous file versions without these versions taking up quota space, but Rewind offers a better way to access data, as it provides folder versioning for up to three previous folder versions for no extra cost.

With Rewind, even if your latest backed up file version is corrupt or infected, you can still restore earlier file versions. And, in the event a large number of corrupt files are backed up, you can avoid the time consuming process of restoring the clean versions one by one with Rewind’s ability to restore multiple files at once.

It’s clear ransomware as an attack isn’t going anywhere, but now you can protect yourself from potential threats. Protect your computer in advance by making sure you have backups, so if you find yourself in a Crypto Virus bind, you’ll be covered with IDrive Rewind.

  • IDrive launches Express Sync Service to get files to the Cloud faster

Sync your data to the cloud even faster with IDrive’s new Express Sync service.

With the recent release of our Sync functionality, we’ve had requests for a more efficient way to sync files to the cloud. So, we’re introducing this new express service to provide a faster way to sync large volumes of data to your cloud accounts. By utilizing a physical drive for data transfer, we’ve eliminated the use of bandwidth, so the upload process is much quicker and your data gets to the cloud ASAP.

Plus, the service is FREE* for our Pro Personal and Business users.

    How does it work?

    1) The user requests and receives an Express Sync drive (up to 3TB).

    2) The user simply selects the data from their devices they wish to Sync and adds it to the Express Sync drive.

    3) The user ships the physical drive back to IDrive where it is then transferred from the device to our secure servers.

    4) The user can then access their data from their cloud account! Users can also selectively sync files across all linked devices.

Express Sync is especially beneficial for users in need of getting terabytes of data to the cloud within 5-7 days, as this physical shipment and upload process is significantly faster than syncing data across a regular internet connection. Your data remains safe throughout the transfer process, stored and encrypted with military grade 256-bit AES encryption and the option for a private key. The service is currently available to customers in the USA, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Australia and the UK.

Ready to speed things up and use Express Sync? Order today, using this link.

    * IDrive Express for Sync service is free, available once a year for Pro Personal users and thrice yearly for Pro Business users. Subsequent service requests will be subject to the $59.95 charge.

  • IDrive Unaffected by Heartbleed Threat

IDrive was Unaffected by Heartbleed Threat

We want to assure our users that we do not use, nor have we ever been exposed to, the affected versions of OpenSSL that were compromised by the Heartbleed threat.

As you may or may not have heard, a serious security bug called Heartbleed recently affected a specific version of OpenSSL, which is an encryption library that many sites across the Internet use. Heartbleed exposes a large security hole and has been an issue for more than half of the online services provided in the world.

IDrive was not affected and continues to provide a comprehensively secure service. Our customers should not be concerned with the safety of their data on IDrive’s servers.

It is important to note, however, that since so many sites on the Internet were affected by the Heartbleed threat, you may want to change passwords for other accounts once those services have patched their servers. If you use the same password for IDrive that you use for other sites, it may be beneficial to change your IDrive password, as well, as a precaution.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our support team for assistance.

  • Did you hear? IDrive is adding Sync!

That’s right. Now, in addition to securing all of your data with our online backup solution, you can also Sync your files in real time across all linked devices as well as to your IDrive online account!

That means any changes you make from one device will instantly and automatically sync to all linked devices. And, you can link as many devices as you want. AND, it works across any platform be it a Mac, PC, or a variety of mobile devices!

IDrive is also proud to announce that the Sync feature can also be protected with our option for private key encryption since this extra layer of protection is not a common feature of most other Sync services.

Using Sync, you can work seamlessly from anywhere, knowing your data is secure and never having to worry about lugging your laptop with you or remembering to convert files. The moment you modify data in your IDrive account, the updates automatically sync to the local drives of all the computers on which Sync is enabled and to your cloud account. So, you can always access the latest version of your files, wherever you are, via web browser or on-the-go using our mobile apps!

To celebrate the launch of Sync, we are offering FREE Sync Space! All you have to do is enable Sync from your IDrive account and you will be gifted Sync space equivalent to your current Backup space. So, if you have a 200GB account, you now have 200GB for backup and another 200GB for Sync!

And our existing plans are now even better with additional space, check it out hereSign up for an IDrive account and have your Backup space matched with an equal amount of Sync space based on the plan level you choose.

So, what are you waiting for? Those files aren’t going to sync themselves!

    Oh, wait. Yes they will…

We meant, go activate Sync now so those files can sync themselves!

  • We tried mining bitcoins… Here’s what happened…

Ever considered mining bitcoins? Well, as a business with 3,000 servers, IDrive decided to look into the idea to see if bitcoin mining was an option during non-peak times, a possible untapped revenue stream. We learned some valuable bit(coin)s of information; here’s what happened…

Most of our users backup their files at night, so our non-peak times are during the day (between 3am and 4pm). During this time, there is unused server capacity that can be used for other operations. Utilizing independent resources (since bitcoining is decentralized) such as the source code on Github, forums on Bitcoin Wiki,, and the bitcoin simulator on, a dedicated team of our best engineers spent a week testing the possibility and found that using our servers to mine bitcoins would affect our business model in four main areas:

    1) Cost

Although IDrive owns 3,000 servers, we used 600 (each with a quad core processor operating at 2.8 GHz) for our simulated tests. Our study projected a year of mining at 100% processing power 24/7 and the assumption that the difficulty of mining (the calculating of hashes) would increase linearly. (We also assumed that there would be no additional charge for operating our servers consistently at full power for an entire year.*) Since mining bitcoins is designed to take a certain amount of time to ensure legitimacy, as more people get involved and more power is added, the cryptography is made more complex to slow down the process. Therefore, as time progresses, more power will be needed to mine (and, thus, more airflow for cooling is also necessary). As a result, it will take more energy to mine fewer bitcoins, with the energy needed consistently increasing.

*IDrive pays a set rate for a certain amount of electricity which we use to power servers. Mining bitcoins uses energy which increases our power expenditure. In our research, the amount of energy used for mining (during non-peak times) never exceeded our set amount, so this particular factor did not cost more. However, there are two other factors to consider. First, the servers usually operate at about 5% of their capacity during non-peak times; while mining bitcoins, the servers would operate at 100% the entire time. If you pay for the amount of electricity used, this increase in energy would cost more. Second, the increase in server usage could potentially wear out the servers faster, as they are operating at a higher capacity for longer amounts of time. This could shorten their lifespan and require replacing servers more frequently, which is another added cost. Lastly, it is possible that we could eventually exceed our electricity usage limit, which would result in our servers being shut down.

    2) Time

As mentioned before, it takes a longer time to mine a single bitcoin as more people get involved and the complexity of the cryptography becomes more difficult. Another point we found valuable is the fact that the time spent figuring out the details of the mining process detracted from time that could be spent focusing on our core services.

    3) Revenue

The value of bitcoins is continually fluctuating based on the market. The ROI would be unpredictable, not to mention the price paid to bitcoin miners will decrease as time goes on since there is a cap on the amount of bitcoins that can be created. Process, energy, complexity, and time will continue to rise as the ROI drops. In our simulated study, it would take a year to mine a total of 0.863 bitcoins. Using the current exchange rate, that would equal around $550.15 USD. As time went on, mining one bitcoin would continue to take longer and longer (while also using more energy). Further, considering we wouldn’t be mining during peak hours, that would cut our processing time in half, doubling the time to make a single bitcoin. So, actually, one year would result in .4315 bitcoins and $275.08 USD.

    4) Security

Our servers are not currently optimized or configured to mine bitcoins. Running bitcoin software on our servers would require installing the bitcoin daemon on each of them as well as re-opening parts of our network infrastructure (that we’d previously locked down) to enable the bitcoin network to periodically access and talk with our servers. We do continuous network security audits to ensure that we don’t have any areas of our network open that do not need to be. Opening up our network for something non-essential, like bitcoin, seemed like an unnecessary security risk.

In the end, we learned a lot about the interesting process of bitcoin mining, however, for us, the pros did not outweigh the cons. So, IDrive decided to stick with that we do best.
