  • We Are Thankful For Online Backup

    thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is about appreciating the little things that make life a lot better, that will be there for us no matter what. Friends, family, and online backup. Yes, online backup. It shelters our digital lives in a cold, hard digital world. So this Thanksgiving we’re giving back to backup and the people who make it possible. We’re backing them up, if you will, into a little warm place in our hearts, where they can feel just as secure, accessible, and warm and fuzzy as the critical data they protect.

    Sharing is Caring

We are thankful for the ability to share files with our loved ones over a secure link. Boy does that come in handy sometimes. And in the sharing process, we never have to worry about our private selfies getting hacked by some creepy dude in, say, Plymouth, MA, a town which is not the same place it was when the pilgrims landed. With IDrive, you can safely share stuff via email, Facebook and Twitter. And we appreciate it!

    Data Security is Emotional Security

The pilgrims couldn’t imagine life without muskets, compasses and large black hats with giant golden buckles. We find it hard to imagine living without encryption. Same difference. And we know people feel the same way, which is why we share our military-grade 256-bit encryption with everybody. We also offer a private key option that’s the securest possible way to protect your data because it makes it accessible only by you. That means a lot to us and our users, as well as the selfie-snatching cyber-criminals it protects us from.

    Upload Seeding

This might sound like a modern day agricultural practice, but it really means having a cloud service upload large amounts of data for you so you can save yourself a lot of time and bandwidth. If you have big data to move, IDrive will send you a temp USB drive, which you upload your data to and mail back to us. We then upload all your stuff to the cloud. This service has a quick turnaround for the amount of data involved–you can upload up to 3TB in under a week. That sure beats the Mayflower’s 66 day voyage across the Atlantic.

The first time you use IDrive Express, we’ll ship you a drive for free out of the goodness of our hearts. You can bet the pilgrims wished they’d had that kind of speediness and convenience. Wifi must have really sucked back then.

    Across the Universe

Universal backup. Ah. We are so very glad that this unicorn of a backup feature, which is only offered by a few services including IDrive, has come into being in the universe. Some services only allow backup for a single computer, and charge you extra money per extra device. That’s just evil considering that most households have at least 5 devices under their roof. And that’s why we’re thankful for universal backup, which let’s you backup an unlimited amount of devices at no extra cost. We’re getting all spiritually connected with our users just thinking about it.

    The Pioneers

Finally, we’re most thankful to our engineering team, who makes backup easy-to-do, convenient and safe. We are thankful for the amazing technology they continue to develop and make better than before. They are the pioneers who figure out how to live life on the digital frontier. And they’re so gracious to share their tools and strategies with the rest of us so we can live better ourselves. We appreciate that just as much as our users. Thanks.

  • Dr. Phil Has Trust Issues with Cloud Backup. We’ve Got the Encryption Prescription!

    dr.phil

This week TV’s Dr. Phil revealed he is dealing with his own feelings of insecurity—cloud insecurity. In an article by USA Today, the television therapist admitted that he loves technology, but doesn’t trust the cloud, and prohibits his employees from backing up. His reason for keeping his heart closed to online backup? He doesn’t want to risk being hurt by data loss. Since we’re experts on data security, we’ll treat Dr. Phil with the same no-nonsense therapy he offers guests on his show.

    Symptoms

In the same blunt manner he uses to treat patients, Dr. Phil has said of the dangers of cloud backup, “If you don’t put it in, it can’t break.” It appears he needs a taste of his own medicine, as he is clearly displaying symptoms of acute fear of technology. Not only does the good doctor not realize how much leverage cloud storage will give him over his data, he doesn’t realize he can safely backup to the cloud as long as his data is securely encrypted using IDrive online backup.

So how can IDrive help Dr. Phil live a more healthy digital life? First let’s look at the root cause of the problem.

    Causes

There are plenty of valid causes for the tension Dr. Phil feels about cloud backup and the steady flow of celebrity selfie leakage. Certainly our favorite TV therapist, a celeb himself, doesn’t want his private selfies leaked. Nor does the public for that matter. But by refusing to use cloud storage, Dr. Phil’s missing out on one of the best ways to protect data. Accessibility, affordability, security, emotional fulfillment. Dr. Phil is probably not getting these things from his current backup solution, which is to upload his files to a thumb drive and bury it in the backyard like a dog bone.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

Dr. Phil is clearly suffering from cloud anxiety syndrome.

The most effective treatment for cloud anxiety is called Private Key Encryption, which makes your data virtually impossible to crack. It could have spared celebs like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Kim Kardashian from having their selfies revealed to the public. But services like iCloud–whose compromise led to the leaks–and Dropbox don’t offer it.

IDrive offers a private key option which allows you to choose your own key, which is never kept on our servers. That means the only person who can unlock Dr. Phil’s data is Dr. Phil. It makes cloud storage as secure as possible, so you can keep all your digital life accessible across all your devices with no worries. In other words, it’s the cure for cloud anxiety syndrome. No shovel or wheelbarrow required.

If treated quickly, Dr. Phil will also benefit from IDrive’s amazing features, including:

    • Backups and restores from any device, anytime and anywhere
    • Protection against natural disasters, wear-and-tear and viruses
    • Convenient file syncing across any linked devices
    • Military grade 256-bit AES encryption with a private key option

With IDrive, Dr. Phil can enjoy all the benefits of cloud backup while staying safe from online threats. Just what the doctor ordered.

  • This Halloween, Survive The Horror of Data Loss with Online Backup

    halloween

Halloween’s not just scary awesome. Between the costumes, decorations, party supplies and pumpkin paraphernalia, it’s scary expensive, too. But it makes it all so worth it to document the whole spooky, silly experience of Halloween with memorable photos and videos that we can smile upon later. That’s why this Halloween, while you’re protecting yourself from all manner of ghoulies, you should remember to securely backup your photos and videos in case of data loss, too. Sure. Vampires that disappear in a puff of smoke are pretty spooky. But not as frightening as real family photos that really disappear from your hard drive in a real puff of smoke! That’s real horror.

As we showed you last Halloween, horror stories of crippling data disasters happen more often than you think. Everyone knows how easy it is to ruin your hard drive just by spilling an ounce of coffee on your computer. But have you considered the more common causes of data loss? Let’s see: Data-eating zombies, flesh-eating cryptoviruses, territorial werewolves – the list could go on. And during the witching hour, anything could happen!

The best way to protect your Halloween selfies from certain doom is a magical spell called IDrive Online Backup. IDrive offers a 256-bit AES encryption with the option of choosing a magical private key that can keep even Frankenstein’s monster out of your data. So folks, remember this Halloween: Memories, like brains, can be eaten by zombies. Data, when protected by IDrive, can last a lifetime.

  • Switching Between Phones? Cross Over With IDrive Mobile Backup

So a lot of folks will be upgrading their phones (and, ahem, wrist watches) in the coming months, with many making the big leap to a whole new platform. We understand this poses a challenge for those whose SIM cards won’t be compatible with their new phones, and who will need to use online backup to transfer contacts, videos and photos between devices.

After all, how does one backup their contacts from one device, and restore them on a totally different device, without their head exploding?

The answer is IDrive’s mobile app. It allows you to safely backup and restore your mobile data between devices, such as Android and iOS, with just one touch.

This cross-platform solution is not just simple and affordable, but secure. IDrive uses military grade 256-bit AES encryption, with a private key option, to keep your selfies protected. That’s like having your own personal bodyguard watching your house while you sleep.

To backup your mobile data, simply:

    1. Download IDrive’s mobile app on your soon-to-be retired device
    2. Go to the “Backup” screen
    3. Tap the “Backup” icon

To restore your mobile data, simply:

    1. Download IDrive’s mobile app on your flashy new smartphone
    2. Go to the “Access and Restore” screen
    3. Tap the “Restore” icon next to the file you wish to access

So if you want to keep a close eye on your Phone contacts, photos, videos and more, IDrive is the easiest, most secure way to do it.

  • iOS8 Compatibility Issue May Effect IDrive Camera Uploads. Here’s the fix!

    idrive online backup ios app

Houston, we have a compatibility issue! iOS8 users who have downloaded IDrive’s app may experience duplicate uploads of their photos.

Apple’s default photo album name, which was called “Camera Roll” in previous versions, has been changed to “Recently Added” in iOS8. Thus IDrive may recognize these re-named versions of your photos as unique images and try to upload them again.

We are currently working on fixing this issue with a new version of IDrive. Until then, we recommend that you:

    •  Disable “Auto Camera Upload” on the “Backup” screen.
    •  Deselect your “Photos” and “Videos” folders while doing a “Backup All” from the “Backup” screen.

While you should hold off on backing up your “Recently Added” photo album, you can still safely upload pictures in other albums by manually selecting them in your “Photos” and “Videos” folders.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.

  • Private key encryption: The Ultimate Cloud Protection

    private-keep-out

Privacy is in the headlines again, but this time it’s not spy agencies that have been snooping on phones, but opportunistic hackers. Over the last few days, a large number of celebrity photo leaks have resulted in one of the most public instances of privacy violation. Even when protecting your data by storing it off-site, there are risks – it can only not happen to famous celebrity, but also you!

The best way to protect your data when it’s stored off site is with private key encryption. Private keys, as opposed to public/default keys, are unique identifiers that you select to encrypt your data. When the data is encrypted with private keys, no one but the keyholder has the ability to unlock the data.  Think of it like storing a safe in a bank vault. That way, even if the bank gets robbed, they can’t open up your safe.

As a reminder to all of our IDrive users and new customers, IDrive offers private key encryption in addition to your password, with private key you will be the only one having the access to your data. Not even IDrive employees can access your files, this is the ultimate level of protection from prying eyes. You can learn more about our encryption process here.

Even more important is mobile protection – and IDrive has that covered as well. IDrive is one of the only services that allows you to securely upload your photos, videos, contacts, and more – and have the same 256-bit AES private key encryption. With private key encryption, your data stays yours.

Private key encryption is available for no extra cost and can be selected when accessing your IDrive account for the first time.

  • IDrive’s Review Roundup

    rewind-review-blog

In case you missed them when they were originally released, we’re recapping some of the flattering reviews we’ve received recently. We truly appreciate the kind words from such reputable sources.

Here are some of the highlights:

    PCWorld – 5/23/14

“If there’s online backup that could be called ‘full-service’ it’s venerable IDrive. Not only does IDrive provide traditional backup, real-time backup, file sharing, and syncing files across multiple PCs and devices (Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android), it’s one of the few services that still offers a free 5GB account.” – Jon L. Jacobi

    Lifehacker – 3/27/14:

“IDrive offers some compelling features you don’t typically find elsewhere. You can set your own encryption key for your data, which means extra protection for both your backups and your synced folder. Also, the free IDrive Express service makes it faster to backup and retrieve your data: Upon request, IDrive will send you an external drive you can transfer up to 3 TB of data to; send it back and they’ll upload the data for you. You can similarly request a storage device to retrieve your data off of. I played with the service a bit this week and found backups to be quick and simple.” – Melanie Pinola

    Wired – 11/25/13:

“Having tried my share of cloud-based backup services, I see the IDrive Express service as something that’s certainly worth the price. It’s convenient and easy, and it provides peace of mind. That you can backup multiple computers and devices adds to its appeal. It’s a common-sense solution to time-consuming online backups.” – Michael S. Lasky

    Notebook Review – 11/8/13:

“IDrive is packed with useful features such as continuous backup, incremental backup, archiving, 256-bit encryption, and IDrive Express. It is a fully featured and easy-to-use online backup solution. We found it simple to set up IDrive on a PC and start a backup. The user interface in both the desktop application and the web browser are straightforward and concise. One of IDrive’s strongest features is incremental backups. IDrive checks all of the right boxes for a solid, fully featured online backup solution, and we’re happy to recommend it.” – Charles P. Jefferies

    PCMagazine – 9/6/13:

“IDrive’s app, working together with its Web interface and apps for PCs, Macs, and Android devices, really does put you in control over what you want to back up and where and how you want to access and share it. All the interfaces are clear and pleasant, and the service offers definite advantages over iCloud and Gdrive. There’s a heck of a lot to like about IDrive: Since it does some things that none of the alternatives do, it earns a 4 out of 5 star rating and a PCM Editors’ Choice.” – Michael Muchmore

We’re always excited to share such positive feedback, as it fuels us to continue to consistently improve our service offering.

  • 50GB of Backup + 50GB of Sync space for less than $1 per year with your iOS Device

    backup+sync

Along with our recent IDrive Sync Launch, we improved our existing service plans by increasing storage without changing our pricing.

We’re now offering even more options for increased storage with our most recent: Mobile Backup Plans. Plus, once you purchase the plan, you can link an unlimited number of computers and devices to a single account to make sure all of your data is secure.

The iOS IDrive app was selected as the winner of PC Mag’s Editors’ Choice Award because of its excellent features:

    • Link an unlimited number of devices to a single account and access them from anywhere.
    • Selectively backup and restore only the stuff you need.

    • Optional private key encryption

And, just to clarify: This amazing $0.99/yr pricing is permanent, not just for the first year. You can purchase this plan through our IDrive Android app.
