  • IDrive adds Two-Factor Authentication

    IDrive has added Two-Factor Authentication.

Two-Factor Authentication is an extra layer of security that requires not just a username and password, but includes another step to confirm the identity of the person logging in.

Once two-step verification is enabled with IDrive, you will need to enter a verification code sent to your email when logging in, and this will ultimately help prevent unauthorized access to your account.

    To enable two-factor authentication:

    1. Login to IDrive through the web and click your username at the top-right of the screen
    2. Select ‘Account’ and click ‘Two-Step Verification’
    3. Click ‘Enable Two-Step Verification’
    4. Enter the verification code sent to your registered email address and click ‘Verify & Enable’. A message is displayed to indicate two-step verification is successfully enabled.

To Log-in after 2FA is enabled:

    1. On the login screen, enter your username and password and click ‘Login’. You will be prompted to enter a verification code sent to your registered email address.
    2. Enter the code and click ‘verify’

For Admins, 2FA can be enabled for your users from the Dashboard. This feature is available on all IDrive accounts for Web and Mobile login.

  • IDrive wins PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice for Online Backup for the 4th year running

When looking for an online backup solution there are many variables to consider, as PC Mag notes. Pricing, storage space, features, and simplicity of use are all at the forefront when it comes to backup, and according to PC Mag’s 2018 online backup review, IDrive Online Backup once again comes out on top.

For the 4th year in a row, IDrive has been named PC Mag’s Editor’s Choice for Best Online Backup Service. With all the great backup companies out there, we strive to ensure that we’re giving our users the most feature-packed backup service, while keeping it at a fraction of the cost of our competitors.

So why did IDrive come out on top?

    • Pricing plans/Unlimited device backup — unique to IDrive, none of the plan sizes limit the number of devices you can backup into a single account. Along with 2TB of space for $69.50 for an IDrive Personal Plan, this puts IDrive among the most cost-effective solution on the market
    • Desktop Interface — clear organization of the desktop application allows for quick and simple navigation
    • Backup Options — Continuous Data Protection, scheduling, archive cleanup, and IDrive Express combine to make sure backups are operating at maximum efficiency
    • Sync — see file changes reflected on all computers/devices on which IDrive is installed
    • Restore Tab — flexible restore tab allows for a wide range of options including Snapshots, which lets users view a historical view of their data and lets you select a point-in-time to restore
    • Web Manager — according to PC Mag, “IDrive has one of the more capable web clients you’ll find among online backup providers.” The web portal allows users to backup, download, search for, and share files via Facebook, Twitter, or email, along with managing all account and subscription settings
    • Mobile Clients — powerful apps for iOS and Android, capable of performing most of the same tasks as the desktop and web clients

Overall, it’s pretty clear why we retained our position as PC Mag’s best backup service:

“IDrive does just about everything you need an online backup service to do—and more. Top features include continuous backup, folder syncing, file sharing, archiving, and File Explorer integration. IDrive is also priced competitively and offers good mobile apps. For all this capability and value, IDrive is an Editors’ Choice for online backup.”

  • Don’t be a Victim: Some tips to Avoid Phishing Scams

Scammers and hackers are always looking for creative ways to spread ransomware and gain access to sensitive personal and business information. If successful, these criminals will hold your data or your business data hostage until they get what they ask for, which is typically a large some of money.

One of these methods, phishing, remains as one of the biggest threats to businesses. In fact, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, $676 million was lost to criminals in 2017 due to email phishing scams.

    What Phishing Attempts Look Like

Phishing is mainly an attempt to fool unsuspecting victims into giving up sensitive information via email or even by phone by disguising themselves as a trusted individual or business.

    These attempts typically consist of:

    • Emails with links to attachments from somebody you don’t know
    • Emails that ask you to reply with your username and/or password
    • Emails that entice you with a prize or deal, mention a current event, or pretend that there’s an urgent reason for you to respond or click a link
    • Social network posts containing links that lead to fake password or login reset pages
    • Targeted attacks via email that appear as if they are from somebody you know or include personal information to get you to respond or click a link
    • A phone call from somebody claiming to be with a company searching for login info, or requesting payment

Phishing emails disguised as work emails are often the most effective when it comes to getting victims on the hook. These could look like:

    • Corporate emails – look like official corporate communications such as invoices, benefits enrollment messages, or other HR notifications
    • Technical emails – pose as error reports or bounced email notifications
    • Consumer emails – designed to replicate emails that are sent to the public such as social network notifications, gift cards, store memberships, etc.
    • Commercial emails – business related emails that may not directly pertain to your company like wire transfer requests or shipping confirmations

Although phishing is most common through emails, be aware that phone scams are also very common. Neither IDrive nor RemotePC will ever call you asking for login info or requesting payment, so if you receive a call of this nature, do not give up any info, and contact us at support@idrive.com so we can look into it.

  • Another Case of Ransomware and Why you Need Backup

Ransomware has been around long enough now that you surely know of the dangers it presents to your data, especially if you’re a business. However, just being aware doesn’t make you immune to an attack.

According to Golfweek, for example, the PGA of America was recently hit with a ransomware attack, with hackers taking control of promotional materials and other important files pertaining to a large golf tournament over the weekend, as well as other upcoming events.

The hackers gave them two options, either pay the ransom and trust the hackers to decrypt the files, or lose these files forever.

In cases like this, it’s obviously difficult for the PGA, or any company, to continue conducting business as usual when they don’t have access to their important files. Alternatively, it’s also tough to trust that once you pay these criminals the ransom, that they will keep their word and unlock your files. So how to proceed?

Along with having malware protection, the best defense against ransomware is to make sure your data is backed up with IDrive, which includes features such as Snapshots that make it easy to recover from a ransomware attack.

IDrive Snapshots gives you the ability to perform point in time recovery of your data, meaning if your data is infected with encryption-based ransomware, all you need to do is select a time-line before the infection and restore it.

As IDrive is cross-platform compatible you can ensure all your PCs and Macs are backed up and protected against these threats.

  • IGN Gives IDrive Another “Amazing” Review

Cloud backup services vary when it comes to pricing and functionality. Typically, the more feature-packed a solution is, the more expensive it is. However, as IGN points out in their latest cloud backup review, “IDrive bucks that trend by offering a ton of features in a very affordable package.”

IGN recently reviewed multiple backup solutions based on three factors: Pricing, features, and performance. IDrive is proud and grateful to have received the highest score of all backup solutions with a 9/10, good enough for an “Amazing” rating from the IGN team.

    Backup Flexibility

When it comes to backup, IGN praised IDrive for having the flexibility to “do it all,” such as backing up an unlimited number of devices including laptops, desktops, mobile devices, external drives, network drives, tablets, and even social media accounts. This is where IDrive one-ups the competition as most other services are missing at least one of those options.

Features including disk image backup, scheduling, continuous data protection, and remote management of backups makes IDrive the service of choice for users who need a flexible solution.

    Bang for your Buck

Compared to other backup services, IGN agrees that IDrive gives you a lot for your money. From storing 10 versions of your files, being a true archive service and not deleting your data, and having sync and share functionality, the normal price of $69.50 per year for 2TB of space is worth it, especially when you consider that you can backup ALL of your devices at no extra cost.

    The Verdict:

“IDrive is pretty amazing, and offers a ton of useful features in a well laid out package, and at a very good price. “

Thanks to IGN for the great review!
