  • What’s the Perfect Backup Strategy?

When it comes to Backup, it’s always best to have dual approach… backup all your important files locally, and then backup your most critical files online where you’ll have access to them from anywhere. Then, as time permits, you can backup the rest of your important files online, which does take some time… based on your bandwidth, number of GBs being backed up, etc.

This dual approach has been widely adopted and praised by companies and consumers world-wide. In this recent article from Accounting Web: “10 steps to the CPA’s perfect backup plan”, this approach was highly recommended. The main reason being… in the event of a disastrous data loss where restoration of all your files is absolutely imperative, you can restore your filesimmediately from your local backup vs. having to slowly restore them online, based on those same limitations of bandwidth, number of GBs being restored, etc.

For this reason, we are proud to introduce the IDrive Portable; the thinnest and lightest USB-powered portable hard drive ever in its class.

In addition to a great sleek and stylish form factor, IDrive Portable offers a software element that allows for a one-click backup of all your important files (like ‘Documents’, ‘Pictures’, ‘Videos’, ‘Music’, etc.). In addition, it provides an option to easily integrate with IDrive Online Backup using the same data-set (assuming you choose the defaults), but of course the data-sets and schedules are customizable. Other great features include multiple PC backup, 320 GB of storage, open/locked file backup, and more. For details, please see the “IDrive Portable Features” on our website.

  • Our Changing Economy and Way of Life

We are bombarded every single day with news of our troubled economy; how our banking systems are collapsing, how auto makers are failing, how credit and insurance companies are hording money and barely staying solvent; how the housing market is crumbling and Americans are losing their homes; and so forth. It’s a dark time in our country’s history; one which all the analysts and experts say will get much worse before it gets better. Consumer spending is at a low-point as Americans are saving what money they can in hopes of trying to stay ahead of this financial disaster.

However, at the same time Americans are doing something they haven’t done in a while… appreciating the little things. People are enjoying more quiet nights at home, spending time with their friends and families. People are seeking inexpensive leisure activities such as going out to the park, attending social gatherings, etc. Along with such activities, many people are doing what they can to capture these good moments and hold on to these memories. They are blogging more, taking more digital photos and/or filming more home videos of family and friends, and so forth.

This economic and social shift has led to a vastly growing need for data storage to archive these new digital photos, home videos, writing projects and other important media files. People need inexpensive, reliable, automated, and simple-to-use backup solutions to manage this need for them. At IDrive Online Backup, we understand this great need and we make it very simple and user-friendly to backup your cherished memories.

IDrive users receive 150 GB of online storage, which is perfect for backing up your important files. The process is very simple to do and automated after the initial setup (designed for the “set it and forget it” user mentality). Best of all, IDrive costs a mere $4.95/month, which is about the cost of a Venti coffee these days. Users can also opt for a yearly payment plan of only $49.50 (includes two months free). With such inexpensive and reliable online backup, we are doing our part in helping people hold onto their precious memories, should their computer hard drives or other traditional backup methods ever falter or fail.

  • Consumer Data – Did You Back It Up?

It’s no secret that data security is one of the most critical issues of the information age, which now live in. Nearly everyone has a computer these days, heck most have several computers – one for the office, one for the home, a laptop for travel, a media center computer attached to their TV or entertainment center at home, etc. With so many computers online and so many threats out there, including malicious viruses, faulty hardware components, theft or loss of equipment, accidental damage to equipment, and even user error, how can you best protect your data?

Relying on traditional backup methods (CDs, DVDs, Tape Backup, USB Hard Drives, etc.) is encouraged, but not always reliable. For consumers, this might mean loss of old family videos, photos, school/work projects, financial records, etc. Such losses may be a sad inconvenience, but seldom devastating. However, for businesses it’s another story altogether.

Here are some data loss statistics, gathered from various sources…

    • 6% of all PCs will suffer an episode of data loss in any given year. Given the number of PCs used in US businesses in 1998, that translates to approximately 4.6 million data loss episodes. At a conservative estimate, data loss cost US businesses $11.8 billion in 1998. (The Cost Of Lost Data, David M. Smith)
    • 30% of all businesses that have a major fire go out of business within a year. 70% fail within five years. (Home Office Computing Magazine)
    • 31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.
    • 34% of companies fail to test their tape backups, and of those that do, 77% have found tape back-up failures.
    • 60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster.
    • 93% of companies that lost their data center for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster. 50% of businesses that found themselves without data management for this same time period filed for bankruptcy immediately. (National Archives & Records Administration in Washington)
    • American business lost more than $7.6 billion as a result of viruses during first six months of 1999. (Research by Computer Economics)
    • Companies that aren’t able to resume operations within ten days (of a disaster hit) are not likely to survive. (Strategic Research Institute)
    • Simple drive recovery can cost upwards of $7,500 and success is not guaranteed.

Nonetheless, whether you are a consumer or a business, backing up your data is important. Businesses are mandated to do so in most cases, due to regulatory and compliance laws, but the average consumer doesn’t always make the time to sit down and backup their data. Why is that? For most, it’s lack of time or understanding. Some users feel the process is too time consuming, too complicated, too technical, etc.

However, there is a solution for that, one which caters to all consumers and businesses alike, regardless of technical expertise or computer savviness – it’s called ONLINE BACKUP. For about the price of a Venti Latte ($5) per month, consumers can install a simple, user-friendly software app on their computers that will automatically backup their important data. The software is automatically configured to backup your ‘Desktop’, ‘Pictures’, ‘Documents’, and other commonly used folders.

Services like IDrive Online Backup ( are designed with this exact purpose in mind, making online backup simple, reliable, and hassle-free for the customer.IDrive Online Backup runs on PC and Mac, costs a mere $4.95/month (or $49.50/year) for consumers, and offers 150 GB (Gigabytes) of online backup, which is a significant amount of space to backup MP3 songs, family photos, important documents, etc. IDrive business plans start at $9.95/month (or $99.50/year).

  • iPhone Contacts Backup

We have the online backup applications for the Windows and Mac platforms. It was only fitting that we offer a Contacts Online Backup for the iPhones.

It is a very easy to use application with one button executions for backups and restores. It does not even require a signup.

“Well, I always sync my iPhone to the desktop, so it is already backed up, so why would I need an online backup for my contacts?”, one might say. Actually it is quite surprising how many iPhone users use iPhone as a pure phone and hardly sync to the desktop. To them, we believe that they would find  IDrive Lite very useful. It is free. We will keep enhancing this application more, possibly add photos backup and sharing functionality.

  • IDrive launches TV ads

IDrive launched nation wide TV commercials with the ‘Did You Back It Up’ theme earlier this week.

Online Backup as a concept is still relatively new outside of the tech community and early adopters and very few people and small businesses know about it or use it, so the ad aims to inform the public about the need for backup and introduces IDrive Online Backup. Here is the press release related to the same.

  • Financial Turmoils and Online Backup

You might wonder what is the link between Financial Turmoils facing Wall Street today and Online Backup?

There is, and it has to do with the general feel to ‘protect’. Protect the wealth one has, protect the tangible valuables one has and , protect the digital assets. We were expecting signups and traffic to decrease in relation to the financial tremors, but on the contrary, we are seeing an uptick, and this is why. People have a natural tendency to protect what they have including digital assets, and one of the best ways to do it is using online backup. It is becoming easier to use, faster, more secure, and more affordable.

IDrive is leading the way here with enterprise features packed into a consumer and small business application. You will not find an online backup solution for $4.95/Month that offers true archiving, web based backup management, fast search and restore.

If you are looking for an integrated online backup, storage, sharing and a hot sites based disaster recovery solution, then IBackup is a better fit. It provides options to create a full copy of the primary location data at the secondary location with minimal lag, that is scalable, affordable and can easily be automated, for small to medium sized businesses.

  • IDrive Online Backup – Some useful tips

We receive 100’s of emails from users every day asking various things about IDrive. Here are the top 10 tips or pieces of information (not in any particular order) related to IDrive Online Backup .

    1.  IDrive does true archiving. If you delete data on your desktop or remove your mapped drive or USB drive, your data on IDrive is not automatically deleted.

    2.  IDrive does block level patching for incremental transfers. This means IDrive backs up only modified pieces of your files, not the whole files making the backup process very efficient.

    3. You don’t have to be infront of your desktop to manage your schedules and backup set. You can do it via web from anywhere.

    4.  IDrive sports possibly the best search among backup services. Search via the desktop client or via web, you will see near instant results.

    5. If you think the IDrive backup is hogging too much of your bandwidth and affects your ongoing work, check the ‘auto-pause’ option on progress bar. It suddenly turns into an intelligent auto sensing application and uses bandwidth only when you don’t.

    6.  To protect your most commonly used critical data, all that you really need to do is install and provide authentication information. That is it!

    7.  Works on Mac!

    8.  Finder plugin on Mac!

    9.  With the optional user defined encryption key, your data is fully encrypted, end to end. This should help you and your business meet many regulatory requirements.

    10. You can do folder restores either from desktop client or directly via web using an applet!

  • IDrive Website with a new look

It is the same IDrive, with the new look and feel. Most of the content is unchanged.

  • IDrive for Mac Finder Plugin

When the IDrive for Mac product was released a a couple of months ago, users loved it for providing an alternative to very limited choices on the Mac platform. When we asked them on what they thought about the product, they suggested us that we need to have a drag-n-drop finder plugin to view, backup or restore in addition to the classic two pane scheduling application.

We listened, and hence the product, IDrive for Mac Finder Plugin.

IDrive for Mac Finder Plug-in integrates with Mac OS X, making access to your IDrive account on Mac as easy as opening a Finder window. Just drag-n-drop the files/folders that you need to backup or restore. While IDrive for Mac application is optimized for best performance, for a quick look and easy drag-n-drop, the Finder Plug-in is a useful tool. Enjoy!

  • IDrive for Mac launched!

We are excited to announce beta release of IDrive Online Backup for Mac.

This is a major feat for us and for Mac users. There are few choices for online backup in the Mac world, and we are excited to offer one. We differentiate from others in this space in performance and ease of use. Our internal tests have shown that IDrive for Mac client outperforms other online backup offerings on Mac by a factor of at least 30%, for both backups and restores.

In addition, IDrive for Mac is the only application that performs block level incremental transfers for both backups as well as restores. Every other application on Mac platform does only incremental transfers for backups. This innovation allows greater efficiency in transfers both ways.

Pricing for the Mac accounts is same as Windows, at $4.95/month for consumers for 150GB, and $9.95/Month for 50GB for business users.
