According to a new report released by the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT), several competing Online Backup companies have been found lacking in the area of security. The report found security issues and vulnerabilities with several popular Online Backup and Online Sync providers. Some areas where much work was needed include transport security and encryption. IDrive Online Backup, however, is already following the suggested steps outlined by SIT to have optimal security.
Complaints that SIT had about competitors include that they use lower-grade, or even no encryption before transport. IDrive protects your files by using 256-bit AES encryption, which is a military-grade encryption standard; before files ever leave your computer, they are encrypted by the IDrive software. In the extremely unlikely case that a file gets intercepted during transport, it will look like a jumbled mess due to the encryption. Think of it as putting all your important data into a security briefcase before sending it over to us.
Competing products also had issues with encryption on the server side. Two of the seven services use a proprietary key, so there’s no telling how those work. Additionally, three of the remaining the seven providers included in the study don’t encrypt files stored on their servers at all. Just think about that for a minute! Your entire digital life – every photo, every document – all stored somewhere in the cloud with no encryption to protect it. That would be like keeping important documents in a plain drawer without a key. What’s the point in paying for a service like that?
At IDrive, we use the same exact 256-bit AES encryption to store your files once they’ve been securely uploaded to our servers. In this case, it’s like IDrive receiving your security briefcase and placing the contents into a secure storage vault. Again, this is the top-of-the-line encryption standard used by banks and the military to keep sensitive information as safe as possible.
