Going Beyond the Highway

The next version of IDrive Autonomy

Smarter steering and speed, better awareness of the cars around you, and a new view of what the car sees.

Where Today’s Systems Struggle

Most driver-assistance systems on the road today follow fixed rules. They do well on straight, well-marked highways, but they struggle on canyon roads, sharp curves and hills.

We built our system to handle those roads too.

What’s New

The new version brings:

AI Cruise Controller

Steers and sets the speed with an understanding of the road ahead.

Better Tracking

Keeps track of the cars around you, even on winding roads.

A New 3D View

See what the car sees, as it sees it.

Smarter Vision

Learns from every drive, and now recognizes traffic lights.

Smarter Steering and Speed

The AI Cruise Controller is the part of the system that drives the car: it steers and sets the speed. Many systems can only nudge the steering wheel. Ours can steer through the whole bend: it looks at the road ahead and plans its own path through every curve.

It also slows down for curves on its own, easing off before a bend and picking up speed on the way out, the way a careful driver would.

Seeing What the Car Sees

Our new 3D view shows the driver what the system sees, in real time: the road and its lanes, the cars around you, and the traffic lights ahead. It runs smoothly on the same computer as the rest of the system, without slowing anything down.

When you can see what the car sees and the path it plans to take, it’s easier to understand its decisions and to trust them.

A Vision Model That Keeps Learning

Our vision model is the part of the system that watches the road through the cameras. It has learned from a lot more driving, and it can now spot traffic lights and tell whether they’re red, yellow or green.

It also guides the steering more precisely. That guidance goes straight to the AI Cruise Controller, for a smoother ride overall.

As with every update, each change is checked on the road with a safety driver, and again in simulation.
