  • 5 Reasons Why Hybrid Backup is the Strategy for You

    chess-140340_1280

So what’s the best strategy for keeping your data safe, but also easy to access?

You can backup all your PCs, Macs, iOS, and Android devices in a single account with IDrive’s PC Mag award-winning application, for instance. But did you know IDrive also offers local backup with super-fast restores in addition to the security of cloud backup? For years people have had no easy solution for utilizing both online and local backup at once. But today IDrive has seamlessly integrated local and online backup into the most convenient and secure backup solution ever: Hybrid Backup.

The synthesis of local and online backup protects data by ensuring it’s never in just one place, so that no matter what happens, you’re protected. And it’s not just families that have precious memories that need to worry – a high number of businesses which suffer major data loss shut down within a year of the loss. Being able to rapidly access backed up files is vital for a business to stay in operation.

What if you could have the security of backing up to the cloud with the expediency of restoring data over a super-fast local connection? IDrive’s Hybrid Backup gives you both of those essentials in one solution. Online backup saves your data from crashes, viruses, and theft, while local backup gives you speedy restores for optimal convenience and business continuity. This hybrid solution not only provides you with more convenience, but peace of mind knowing you have the most control possible over the data which has become so integral to your life.

Here are five reasons why IDrive’s Hybrid Backup is the backup solution of the future:

Portability — IDrive’s Hybrid Backup lets you keep your most important data in your pocket for easy access. With our local backup you can store data on your hard drive for faster restores. But you can also backup to IDrive Wi-Fi, our 1TB external drive, so you can carry your files on-the-go. IDrive Wi-Fi gives you a secure fast-lane for backing up and restoring data between all your devices without plugging in.

Faster Restores — Hybrid Backup not only gives you universal access to your data from the cloud, but the fastest restores possible. With IDrive, you can expediently restore files from local drives when you need them. Meanwhile, our cloud backup solution makes all your files restorable from any device, whether it be on the PC, Mac, Android or iOS platform. IDrive’s Hybrid Backup gives you unprecedented access to your data.

Encryption —  IDrive makes your data easily accessible from the cloud and local drives, but also protects all your critical files against viruses and online theft with military grade 256-bit AES encryption. Any data backed up using IDrive’s Hybrid Backup is automatically encrypted on the local and cloud levels, giving you peace of mind knowing your data is just as safe as it is easy to restore. IDrive users also have the option of choosing a super-secure private key so only they hold the code that unlocks their data.

Disaster protection — While you can restore data faster with local backup, your files are still vulnerable to natural disasters, theft, and other causes of data loss that affect physical storage devices. This is where IDrive’s online backup comes in. IDrive stores your data in world-class, disaster-proof facilities, ensuring that your files are always safe from device failures, storms and the occasional coffee spill. If your home computer (along with all your data) crashes, you can easily restore all your files from the cloud to your new computer.

Compatibility — IDrive’s Hybrid Backup is compatible with all your devices, allowing you to backup all your data to a local drive, as well as the cloud, from any server, smartphone, tablet or computer. IDrive offers backup for an unlimited number of devices, from iOS and Android to PC and Mac platforms, at no extra charge per device. With our Hybrid Backup solution, your entire network of devices can be secured with encryption, and any important data can be made rapidly accessible via a local connection which is just as secure as it is speedy.

Today there’s no reason to choose between secure cloud backups and speedy local restores. You can have the best of both worlds with IDrive’s Hybrid Backup, ensuring that your data is just as safe as it is easy to access.

IDrive’s Apple Watch app will protect any data stored on what Tim Cook has called “the first smartwatch that matters.” We will also make accessing backed up files more convenient than ever by bringing cloud data right to the wrists of Apple Watch’s many adopters.

Apple Watch is an iOS 8.2-friendly device which works in conjunction with iPhone 5 and later, and stores up to 8GB of data, including music and photos. • IDrive at CES 2015

    IMG_1352

IDrive went big last week at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, one of the largest tech conventions in the world. We shared a lot of advice on the latest solutions for securing data with many techies and industry leaders alike, and we were pleasantly surprised to meet those of our users who stopped by for some face-to-face time with IDrive. For those who couldn’t be there, here’s a recap of IDrive’s experience at CES.

Introducing IDrive Wi-Fi at the Big Event

We started the New Year with an exciting release, IDrive Wi-Fi, and thought there was no better place to unveil it than CES. When we showcased our new 1 to 2 TB wireless drive at the Sands Expo hall, which featured Smart home products and wearables, we were pleased by the enthusiasm folks showed while holding this sleek, smartphone-sized drive in their hands.

IDrive Wi-Fi is a personal cloud in your pocket, enabling you to quickly backup and restore data over a local connection, while keeping it safely encrypted in the cloud. All data stored on IDrive-Wifi is protected with military-grade 256-bit AES encryption along with an optional private key. We also allow you to backup an unlimited amount of computers, smartphones and tablets into one IDrive Wi-Fi device, which is compatible on a variety of devices such as PC, Mac, Android and iOS.

To meet everyone’s needs, we offer IDrive Wi-Fi in two convenient plans:

    In the News

Our release of IDrive Wi-Fi at CES earned us a lot of attention from the press, which, of course, we humbly accepted. We owe a special thanks to TechCrunch for a great review of IDrive Wi-Fi that we feel captures its value well. We work hard to put out the best products and appreciate it when folks like TC give us positive feedback.

IDrive Wi-Fi was also featured in VentureBeat, SlashGear, and Ubergizmo this week. Click through to any of these articles for more info on IDrive’s latest innovation.

    Quotes from CES

Finally, we want to close off our recap of the 2015 CES with a few quotes to sum up the experiences of those team members in attendance this year.

“All the smart home technology was really cool. I’m looking forward to controlling my A/C with my phone!” – Matthew Harvey, Communications Manager

“That wearable selfie-snapping drone is something straight out of science fiction, and I can’t wait to get my hands … well wrist on one!” – Shane Bingham, Business Development Manager

“Yeah, but the facial scanner for 3D Printers will make selfies a thing of the past!” – James, Support/QA team member

“The most interesting product for me at CES this year had to be DNA Vault, even if the concept is completely fictional at this point–something like backing up your DNA for future use, if there will be any. Imagine being able to restore your cells to the state you were in at age 20, when you are actually 70! Straight out of science fiction.” -Raghu Kulkarni, CEO – Raghu Kulkarni, CEO

“My favorite product was the solar-powered Luci lantern. It’s an inexpensive way to light up any area. No wires. No batteries. You just pick the color to match the surrounding.” – Maryam Mousavi, Property/Office Manager

    Until next year, CES!

  • Jennifer Lawrence, IDrive Has the Solution to Protecting Your Selfies

Jennifer Lawrence at the red carpet

It’s no secret that it was a rough couple of months for Jennifer Lawrence and countless other celebs whose selfies were leaked after their cloud accounts were compromised. Since we’re based in LA, we’re familiar with the pressures of life in the spotlight, so we decided to help celebs like Ms. Lawrence by sharing the secret to protecting their digital privacy.

Let’s Look at How Selfie Leaks Happen

When you take selfies on your iPhone or Android, they may be automatically uploaded to whichever cloud service you signed up with. Most of these cloud services do encrypt your data when it is saved in the cloud. But the question is, how strong is the encryption?

The encryption key to your data is often decided by the service itself, meaning the service provider has the master-key in their servers. That leaves your selfies vulnerable to prying eyes who can find various means of accessing your account, which is how so many celebrities had their private selfies leaked to the public.

Does the Two-step Authentication Offered by Some Services Prevent Hacks?

The answer is often ‘no’. While helpful, two-step authentication is not a foolproof method. Employees of your cloud service, who may have access to the service’s system, can simply bypass the two-step method and snatch your selfies.

So would a strong password prevent people from cracking your data?

A strong password is another step in having solid data security because it makes it difficult to guess the right key. But it is by no means a guarantee that hackers can’t sidestep your password through ‘forgot password’ email interceptions, or that an employee won’t have direct access to that information. You simply need more than a strong password.

So What Is the Solution to Saving Jennifer’s Selfies?

The answer is Private Key Encryption.

Private key is simply the most secure way to protect your data. Period. So secure in fact, that had Jennifer Lawrence been using a cloud storage solution with a private key, her selfies never would have hit the limelight.

Our optional private key would have made it impossible for others to access Jennifer’s data. She could have chosen the encryption key that unlocks her data. The key would have never been stored in our systems and only Jennifer could have accessed her private photos.

Now Let’s Summarize How IDrive Can Protect Your Selfies

First we use 256-bit AES encryption where we apply our ‘Private Key’ encryption, an optional keyphrase used to encrypt your data. The key is chosen by the user–Jennifer Lawrence, for instance–so we never know what it is. That means no one but Jennifer can ever access her data. That’s real privacy. That’s what Jennifer deserves. That’s what everyone deserves.

So Here’s How Celebs Can Use IDrive to Protect Their Selfies:

    1. No matter what kind of selfies you’re taking — we don’t judge! — back them up securely with IDrive. Keep your privacy in your hands, not those who will mishandle it.
    2. Choose a private key, so no one but you can access your data. That way you can still protect those memories without fear of them falling into the wrong hands.

The hard lesson learned from the celebrity selfie leaks is that data is more than just data, it’s our digital life. Now celebs have an opportunity to protect their privacy the right way with IDrive.

To help the effort, we’re launching a special page dedicated to helping spread the word of secure selfies, called saveourselfies.com. We’re also offering a special deal to any celebrity affected by the leaks, or any well-known personalities who want to protect their data: They’ll get free, unlimited mobile backup for life, along with instructions on how to ensure their private data stays private. Acceptance will be on a case-by-case basis. If you’d like to learn more, e-mail us at info@saveourselfies.com, or visit www.saveourselfies.com.
